Public Works and Government Services Canada retained Shoreplan Engineering Limited to assist with the design of Fisheries Compensation Plan features in Martindale Pond, St. Catharines. The features are required as compensation for destroyed or altered habitat as a result of dredging and disposal cell construction of a rowing course. The Henley Regatta Course in Martindale Pond will be the site of the World Rowing Championship in August 1999.
Shoreplan Engineering Limited designed habitat cells around the perimeter of the containment dykes. Four distinct habitat cells were designed, each targeting specific species and increasing diversity of the fisheries habitat.
In addition to the dyke perimeter work, the compensation plan included provision of reefs in the Richardson's Creek channel and shore stabilization using live crib along several eroding sections of the Martindale Pond shore.
